As a result of our studies with #Micorrizas we are working on the development of different substrates that combine the action of the different trophic levels, including #earthworms for the benefits they bring in terms of fertility, aeration and degradation of organic matter to our soils, being one of the main indicators of #soil health.
Earthworms are true engineers and one of the links in the #redtrophicsoil. Their work is very critical in the soil ecosystem where they support plant growth in many ways.
In this podcast we want to showcase research that highlights the importance of earthworms in food production. The authors of this research help to shed light on their role in food production. They estimate the impact of earthworms on global production of key crops.
They use a comprehensive analysis of several types of maps:
In addition, they compile and analyse together all the information provided in the scientific literature on earthworms and the data obtained from the maps.
This is equivalent to more than 140 million tonnes per year.
It has also been found that the contribution of earthworms is particularly notable in developing countries. For example, earthworms contribute 10% of total grain production in sub-Saharan Africa and 8% in Latin America and the Caribbean.
Thus, the researchers demonstrate that earthworms are important drivers of global food production. On the other hand, they suggest the need for investment in agroecological policies and practices to support earthworm populations and overall soil biodiversity. In other words, to achieve a healthy living soil. In this way, a major contribution to the goals of sustainable agriculture could be made.
