The Spanish project “On-farm growth and application of Mycorrhizae” carried out by the Micorrizas Innovation Team is one of the 24 European finalists in the ARIA 2023 awards. The team is made up of the El Colletero Association, Tomateco, Agrovidar and the scientific and technical assistance from CLEAN-BIOTEC. We competed for the award in the Environmental Protection category, along with 5 other initiatives.
Mycorrhiza is the symbiosis between mycorrhizal fungi and plant roots.
In this symbiosis, the fungus benefits from the plant by taking the carbohydrates that it cannot manufacture.
While the plant benefits from the fungus by expanding the radius of action of the plant’s root. The fungus facilitates access to nutrients and water.
On the other hand, the fungus acts as a signal messenger between plants. In this way, plants increase their defenses against pests, diseases and stress situations.
Furthermore, these mycorrhizal fungi play a fundamental role in the formation of soil and the maintenance of its structure.
Likewise, they are relevant in the transfer of atmospheric carbon captured by plants in the photosynthesis process. They are responsible for keeping carbon in the soil.
Thus, the management of crops with mycorrhizae emphasizes the role of the soil as the main sink of atmospheric Carbon.
The Agricultural and Rural Inspiration Awards (ARIA) 2023 celebrate CAP-funded projects. Projects promote capabilities for agriculture and rural areas through lifelong learning, innovation and competitiveness.
The Agricultural and Rural Inspiration Awards are an initiative of the EU CAP (Common Agricultural Policy) Network.
The ceremony in which the winners in the four categories will be named will take place on December 4 in Brussels. Clean-Biotec will attend this gala as a representative of the Mycorrhizal Innovation Team.
The popular vote intervenes in the selection of the winners.
Here you can access our Mycorrhiza initiative to find out what the project consists of and vote.
The deadline to vote ends on December 1 at 6:00 p.m.
